April 24,
at 4 P.M.
Left Berkeley in company with Miss.
Mary Erickson. Drove through Tracy and
Stockton; reached San Andreas about 9 P.M.
Had stopped for 40 min. in Stockton for
dinner. Since we were in a hurry, we
noticed few birds along the road. The
usual red winged blackbirds, meadow
larks, California shrikes, English sparrows,
linnets were seen intermittently after we
passed through the Livermore hills; dark
put an end to further observation.
On reaching San Andreas, we stopped
at Pac. Tel. & Tel. office to find address
of Mr. Wiley, who signed the last letter
to Dr. Grinnell regarding the "jay hunt" as
"Secretary of the Calaveras County Sportsmen
Association". This title, I have reason to
believe was adopted for the express purpose
of making the "jay shoot" personnel
sound like a real organized body. Sans
"jay shoot", sans title, I believe.
Had no trouble locating Wiley, so
called on him immediately. He extended
the "glad hand" readily to us and was
quite pleasant. We, in turn, expressed our
appreciation for the favor granted us, namely,
allowing us to be at hand for the shoot.
