San Joaquin R., 3 mi. NE. Vernalis, San Joaquin Co. Calif. Oct. 18, riparian association. This morning I found the following mammals in my traps: 1 Nestoma fusipes and 3 Mus musculus. The wood rat was caught beside a willow clump and a fallen oak log. Within the log it probably nested. I found more fresh sign elsewhere but caught no more rats in my settings placed nearby. Apparently some animals survived the recent flood and are now 're-claiming' the bottomlands. Last August, 1935, I caught nothing in fifteen trap nights. Now in forty-five trap nights I get four animals! But more important, Dave Johnson took 5 mammals set out of 24 traps last night out 1/4 mi. from the flood banks to which continuously the flood waters reached for '3 weeks' [quote Mr. Ohm]. This reclaiming of territory must take place to a greater or less extent each year. For birds seen, see notebook of D. H. Johnson.
