Itinerary
San Joaquin R., 3mi. NE. Vernalis, San Joaquin Co., Cal.
Oct. 18,
Left Berkeley yesterday, October 17, at
1 P.M. in company with Dave Johnson.
At approximately 3:30 P.M. we arrived in
Vernalis, which is a small town just
north
south of the San Joaquin - Stanislaus
and is
county line, on the road from Tracy
to Newman. Vernalis itself is in
San Joaquin Co. Inquiring at the
general store where "Kincaids Ranch" was
located (the locality where R.J. Gnr
in 1931 took two Nestors foxes and
several brush rabbits), we were
told that the ranch had passed into
other hands and that the new owner
quite likely would not be amenable
to any trapping activities. Therefore,
we decided to approach the officials
of El Solyo Ranch, a large ranch
approximately 3mi. due S.E. of Vernalis.
a permit to hunt & camp on the "game
reserve" which includes all the river
bottomlands in this immediately
vicinity, was given readily. However,
a reconnaissance over the area soon
convinced us that trapping would prove
to be unprofitable, since most of the
land bordering the river had been either
