Itinerary
5 mi. W & 1/4 mi. S Independence, 6000 ft., Inyo Co., Calif.
an oak within 50 feet of our camp. Found the nesting
cavity of a Red-shafted Flicker in a broken-off willow
near the creek. There is numerous sign of [illegible] and
Russell reports seeing some. There are some gopher
workings on the Artemisia flat above the creek.
May 30 Set 35 traps on the Artemisia, Chrysothamnus, buckbrush
(Ceanothus cuneatus)
association above the creek. Caught 4 Reithrodontomys
elegantis, 2 Dipodomys, 2 Peromyscus maniculatus,
and 3 P. boylii. In the 18 traps left set along the
creek, in the underbrush, willows, etc., caught a
Diphractus and 3 Peromyscus boylii.
10 traps set in a patch of grass among some willows
cought only 2 P. boylii.
10 traps set in a willow thicket in which there was
considerable ground water and much grass caught 2
Microtus californicus and 1 P. boylii. A Schuyler trap
set near camp caught 1 Citellus beecheyi.
Shot a Spotted Towhee. The mate was nearby at
all times, but I was unable to collect it. Caught a
Sceloprus by hand as it ran about in the food
boxes.
May 31 In the traps left set along the creek, caught 1 Microtus
longicaudus, 1 Microtus californicus, and 2 Peromyscus boylii.
The M. longicaudus, together with trap, had fallen in
the creek. The trap had been placed beneath willows
at the stream's edge. The M. californicus was caught in
a similar situation, only a few feet from where the M.
