Hyla arenicolor
Sept. 5 Indian Cove, 3000 ft., San Bernardino Co., Calif.
Dr. Miller and I collected 18 adults from granite pools. In first fairly steep part of canyon above pini grounds is an area of exposed granite bed rock, eroded into jumbled large boulders, potholes, and slickenslides. 5 water temperatures were taken -- all 24.8°C (about 11:00 A.M., spotty overcast day with intermittent sun and shade. The first animal, and two others of the ones I collected, were in clear granite cracks. The remainder were sitting out on smooth granite faces, mostly shaded. The tanks contained clear water and were not half-filled with sand and silt as I have seen others on this trip. The silt layer was from 1/2" - 3" in some pools; other pools were almost free of silt.
Rough sketches of three common types of "niches":
(g' x 3' pool, low in canyon; to 8" deep; sandy silt bottom; little surrounding vegetation)
