Hendriksen 1950 Journal Sept. 11 Stubley Spring, 4500 ft., Riverside Co., Calif. These men told of "black squirrels", larger than Chipmunks, which they commonly saw around the Hidden Valley Picnic Grounds. About 5:00 P.M. we investigated the area, in their company. We saw no squirrels. Sept. 12 Stubley Spring to Cottonwood Springs, via Ivanpah Tank, 29 Palms, and White Tanks, Riverside San Bernardino Co. Bailey, Norris, and Jerry Russell left for Berkeley at about 5:30 A.M. Dr. Miller, Ward Russell, & I broke camp at about 9:30 A.M. and drove to Ivanpah Tank, 4200 ft., Riverside Co., Calif. This is a damned basin in rotten granitic rock. At the present time it is almost filled with muddy water -- apparently a result of the recent rains. This appears to be only temporary water; there is a trickle below the dam, which contains where some filamentous green algae indicates at least semi-permanence. There seemed to be no specialized vegetation associated with the tanks other than the above-mentioned algae. I took a Callisaurus draconoides from granite gravel, among the decaying granite boulders, at the edge of the tank. Leaving Ivanpah Tank, we drove to 29 Palms, 2000 ft., San Bernardino Co., Calif., where we bought supplies. On Adams Road, a few blocks of Monument Headquarters, we saw a Dipso...
