Aug. 24 Lower Covington Flat, 5000 ft., Riverside Co., Calif.
I walked on down the canyon to a point
where it was definitely beginning to
widen out into a wash on the lower
slope of the mountain. At this point
I encountered car tracks in the sandy
bottom of the wash, the vehicle having
entered from below. A short
distance from or down from the point
where I first
encountered the car tracks,
the canyon turns from a N.N.E. direction
to an E.N.E. one. At this point I
started back. Considerable Catclaw
occurs in this lower part of the canyon.
Near the end of the car tracks I found
a strip of white cloth tied to a catclaw
branch, like a trap flag. I could not
locate a trap or any other deposited
object near it. At 8:45 returned
to Lower water hole (dam), and took
a Calif. Jay from a group which had
been bathing in the water. The water
was piled; and the bird I shot was
quite wet on breast and wings. There
is considerable growth of mosquito in
this vicinity. Returned to camp, then
went out to check steel traps set
