Oct. 19 5 km. N. Villavieja, 1400 ft., Huila, Colombia, S.A.
Site beside a "road" (apparently cars have
navigated it in the past) which comes
out from Villavieja. The surrounding
countryside is largely arid, with
areas of exposed clayey rock and
sparse short grass occupying most
of the area. There are scattered patches
of thorn scrub (heavily salted with mesophytic
shrubs and trees) in the bottoms of small
gullies which cut the countryside everywhere
I have seen so far. One of those gullies
flows past camp, just W. of the campsite.
This gully, in the vicinity of camp and
on S. to where it joins a small quebrada
flowing to the Magdalena R., is bordered
(and filled) by a rather dense tangle of
trees and shrubs. About 100 yards S. of
camp, the "road" from Villavieja crosses
a quebrada flowing W. & S.W. to the
Magdalena R. (perhaps 2 mi. distant). Along
this quebrada the vegetation is in spots
quite thick and some tall trees can be
seen. The relative permanence of flow
in the above quebrada may be indicated
by the occurrence of small (1"-1'1/2") fish
in its waters. At night the water at
the road crossing is cool to the touch;
at mid-day it is quite warm to the
