Crestophaga subcireaetris
Oct.20 5 km. N. Villavicja, 1400 ft., Huila, Colombia, S. A.
Squeaking brought a pair in to within
about 15 feet while working in thickst
on S. bank of quebrada S of camp, near
the "road". One was collected; the mate (?)
stayed close by, although it remained
fairly well hidden. It called repeatedly
while I was in the vicinity - faintly
reminiscent of the call of a redwing
blackbird (to me).
Oct.22 An individual carrying something in
its bill (insect?) was shot near the
R.R. tracks. I could not locate any
nest in the vicinity.
Oct.23 A pair was shot with a single .38
shot shell in dense brush near
the quebrada bottom. They seemed
clearly to be a mated pair, keeping
very close together. They were part
of a loose flock of 8 to 10 which came
in close in response to several squeaks.
Stelgidopteryx ruficollis (see species
account) and another, larger, all-black
swallow (or swift?) were seen frequently
working at about 100-500 ft. altitude
over the region of the quebrada. 4
large, dark, wild turkey like birds
were flushed from dense tree growth
