Turkey Vulture
Oct. 29 5 km. N. Villavieja, 1400 ft., Huila, Colombia, S. A.
a challenge. Once I saw a Caracara
run about 20 ft. to chase away a
"Pichilingo". At one time I looked up
to see what appeared to be mating
(but may have been a fight) between
two Turkey Vultures. The two birds
stood almost breast-to-breast, with heads
moving up and down, apparently pecking
at each other. One obtained a grip on
the other bird's neck, and, maintaining
this hold, maneuvered onto the other
bird's back. The two remained thus,
actively struggling, with wings
partly extended, for about 10 seconds,
then broke apart. The aggressor
showed no further interest in the
other bird.
At about 10:30 P.M., beside road to
Villavieja (from camp) near Quebrada
Lajas, I found a Turkey Vulture
sleeping in a tree. The woods were
fairly dense and mesophytic at
this point. The bird had its head
tucked under a wing, and was
not aroused immediately by the
light. Its perch was a 1" diam.
limb about 10 ft. above ground.
