Elachistoleis ovale
Nov. 6 5am N. Villavieja, 1400 ft., Huila, Colombia, 5-A.
cultivated plants here are small
(to 3' or 4') bananas, and a sugar cane-like
plant in rows about 3' apart,
and rice.
growing to 3'-6 1/2', A Most of the ground
in this corner of the field is muddy
or has puddles of standing water.
The grass growing here is apparently
a vegetatively-reproducing plant,
appearing similar to Bermuda Grass
See Dr. Holbling's notes, his #5021,
for color & form description.
Nov. 9 Villavieja, 1400 ft., Huila, Colombia, 5-A.
One specimen (RCS#5049) was heard,
traced (triangulation on its call) several
times, and finally collected (see map
in today's journal for collection
spot). It moved about 2 ft. at
least once while we were searching
for it - probably because of the
disturbance created by our search.
We were again impressed by the
ventriloquial quality of the frog's
voice, and by its secretive-ness.
When we finally, on the 4th or 5th attempt,
located the frog, we were kneeling with
our ears about 2'-3' distant from it, and
saw it only after a thorough search.
