Kerdrick 1950 Journal 57 Nov. 18 Villavicencio, Meta to Trinidad, Boyaca, Colombia, S.A. with sediment as the rivers of the Magdalena Valley. Some signs of rapids were noted, especially in the larger streams, but my impression is that these streams are not raging torrents like the Magdalena when I saw it. The major portion of the flight (from about the Rio Meta - Rio Upia junction on?) was over almost continuous llanos, broken by rather narrow, meandering lines of forest along small stream courses. A number of smoke plumes were seen on the llanos; our hosts told us that this is the dry season, and that burning is carried on "to promote a fast growth of good cattle feed". They said that occasionally fierce grass fires result, burning immense areas of the llanos. Although this is the "dry season", the llanos were liberally dotted with areas of open water. In some areas, I could clearly see much grass-covered swampland with standing water visible between the grass-knuckshes and trees.
