Journal 40 Myrna Leon 1969 July 19 (cont.) July 20 Papa Leon Tree, 150+ ft., Depto. Lima, Peru up the Cajete valley which is about 60 miles north of here, then head more than 60 miles inland on a dirt road. It will be for general collecting and to see how far Annicus goes (ie-whether it goes down but for) and also to get Marmosa. No museum expedition has over there traveled in that valley before. 6:00am Pearson, Ray, & I checked our traps. I caught a Phyllotis darwini and a Phyllotis annicus within 100 ft. of each other in the lower part of the gully in traps set next to rocks near cactus. Neither Pearson or Ray caught anything. I also caught a lizard (MAL 192) near the same place. The Phyllostet will be kept alive. 7:00am Left Papa Leon for the mountains. Past Mala we came across a dead fox on the side of the road. It must have been killed just last night. Dr. Pearson took measurements and we are saving the skull. It is a small Dusieygn. From Cajete we took the road inland towards Yungas. The going is slow because the road is rocky & somewhat winding. It goes up very slowly through a lush valley surrounded by pretty barren & steep mountains. The Cajete River is clear and fast flowing. Most of the road is populated. Fox The lower slopes are irrigated - banana & papaya tree are
