2 June
Barrow, Alaska
Slept in, hoping to get over this cold
quickly. In the afternoon I went out to
harvest the three redback nests. Went with
Tom to the two near Village Ridge - Cake-eater
area. Collected 4 eggs and an incubating F
from each. Saw a curlew scapiper F by
Cake-eater on the way in. Back to the lbb
to exchange Tom for Pitelka. Drove out to
Micromet area (now extinct), dropped FAP,
and continued to Wohlslag Slough to collect 4
more eggs and an incubating F. (See C. alpine
notes - thindate).
In the evening drove out with Tom across
Wohlslag to collect material for Berlee extraction,
took 8 cores from saturated flat on So. bank
of Wohlslag, in an area but recently exposed.
Went on to Elson bluffs and took 8 more from
a flooded polygon trough system. Walked around
this area - saw pectoals trying to set up territories,
with some hostip. Found a 3-egg Phalacrope
nest - far ahead of other areas. Returned to
place this material in the funnel, then home to
write notes and to bed.
It was again quite warm. This has
been the warmest spring of my experience, which
makes the extensive snow cover surprising.
Must have been a very heavy snow pack this
