(23 July) evening to go to the movie, then over to the
lab to measure insects and process birds.
24 July
Barrow, Alaska
Cold, foggy, and windy. Pete took the
wessel out to check traps, so I began counting the
set of tanglefoots collected yesterday. Did site I, then
sorted 200 samples and measured insects. In the
afternoon, in a very strong wind, went out to area
near FAA for new 200 samples. Duplicated the
27 June sample 1576. Next went out to check
the site I insect traps. The can traps are still
not quite at zero - 1 each of T. tipula, 6 Pedicia.
In the evening began hand-sorting 200
samples as Pete went out to check his traps.
The lines produced 2 juv. phalaropes today -
more evidence of fair breeding in this species.
25 July
Barrow, Alaska
Still quite windy. I planned to try
using the tape recorder or transects today
to avoid fooling with paper in the wind. We
were delayed by a malfunction (loose battery
connection) in the machine, then went out
to begin at IV and quickly discovered that
the wind obscured my voice in the machine.
So I used paper.
Did habitat transects at IV, V, VI, VII, & VIII as Pete picked up traplines, then went
