Natfield - 1934 Colo R., ½ mi N Calit - New Monument, 500 ft., Clark Co., Nev. January 27, 1934 compact layer of brown clay about 2½ in. thick. Under this layer there is a thick layer of coarse sand. Between the clay and sand the gophers make their burrows Higher up, about 50 feet from the slough bank, the gophers go much deeper, often 1½ to 2 feet below the surface. While setting traps, saw a flock of 5 or 6 green-winged teal, feeding in shallow water, with head under and tail pointing upward. Saw a flock of 15 woodpeckers in the same place. Other birds seen – gilded flicker, cactus woodpecker, sparrow hawk (female?), red-tailed hawk, some sort of sandpiper, a vermilion flycatcher, and a Bewick wren. Heard a screech-owl out over the marsh. January 28, 1934 Caught in gopher traps – 1♂, 2♀♀. Changed sets to north of camp, made 13 sets (26 traps) Put up 3 gophers caught in morning. Pun traps in afternoon, had caught 7. Changed several sets, and left all traps out. While going over traps, saw following birds – blue-gray quailcatcher, verdin,
