Hatfield-1934
Colorado R., 31 mi. N, 2 1/2 mi. W.
Camp Mohave, Mohave Co., Ariz.
January 22, 1934
Drove up to Searchlight for mail and supplies. Ate noon meal there and then drove down to Browns Ferry. On way saw two shrikes and a cactus woodpecker. Crossed ferry (for $2.50) and drove south along river for about 1 1/2 miles. Camped about 200 yards from the river bank in creosote and Atriplex association.
There are numerous small sand dunes near camp.
Went down to river bank and looked at beaver workings. There is a rather dense growth of young willows along the bank, and the beavers are working from the south end of the grove toward the north. They have downed about 50 yards of the growth at the south end of the grove. Some trees 2 in. in diameter have been cut down with 2 or 3 bites.
Saw a road runner about 100 yards from camp.
Set out 100 mouse traps in sand, and 12 rat traps on the dunes at the entrances of Dipodomys deserti burrows.
