January 8, 1934
Left Berkeley January 6, in company
with H.S. Fitch, D.A. Feathers, S.B. Benson
in charge. Left at 11 A.M., and drove through
Bakersfield and over the Tehachapi Pass,
spending the night 2½ mi. E Mohave. Ate
breakfast in Mohave, and drove through to
Needles. During the early part of the day
(Jan. 7), the drive was made through
portions of the desert abounding in Yucca
mohavensis. Saw several ravens, and
several "hawks", but none close enough to
shoot. During the afternoon saw much Yucca
brevifolia. Camped for the night about
1½ mi. S Needles. The next morning (Jan. 8)
drove into Needles for breakfast and
spent some time there purchasing supplies.
Saw several Brewer blackbirds and numerous
English sparrows. From Needles drove
to present camp. Eureka drove through
localized areas of Yucca mohavensis and Yucca
brevifolia, with prickly pear and barrel cactus
present everywhere. Stopped at Search-
light on the way, and then drove down
to the river Colorado River bottom on
the west side of the river about 2½ to 3
miles south of Brown's ferry. Stopped first
