Went up to look at gopher sets in morning.
Caught no gophers.
Caught in mouse traps -
4 Dipodomys merriami
1 Peromyscus eremicus
The gophers up in the mountains are fairly scarce and apparently cover a great deal of territory that is individually. It would seem probable that the length of their runways is due to the scarcity of food. Leading to the same assumption is the notable fact that none of the gophers so far caught in the mountains has the slightest amount of fat. This lack is striking when one compares them with the valley form, having a great deal of fatty tissue.
Changed some sets, left others in same places.
The scarcity of mammals as shown by last night's trapping results, seems to me to be due to the cold weather. The night before last was warm, and we caught many mice and rats. Last night was cold and though the trap line was about 200 yards from that of the night before, and in the same type of environ -
