August 31 En route to Cerro Vieja, Dept. of Lambayeque, Peru mountain to area where Ray had caught lizards on August 17. When walking we saw many Zonotrichia capensis and Andean Flickers (Colaptes rupicola).
We saw several lizards scurrying in the grass but could not catch any. We did catch several of the purple-bodied lizards that were at the same site caught on the 17th. Soon Carl and Fred drove up in the car, and Ray and Fred remained to catch lizards while Carl and I returned to the Pass to hunt flickers and sparrows. I got several shots but did not collect Zonotrichia capensis. I did collect several tiny frogs, which I gave to Fred in stream. About 13:30 we moved on and stopped at area 7 km N and 21 km E of Olmos (el. 2500 ft) where we had stopped on the way up. Here both Carl and I collected a Guayaquil Woodpecker (Phloeocastes gваяquilensis). Mine was an immature and had difficulty in skinning it so I discarded it. I also collected a Tropical Parula (Parula pitiayumi). Ray collected a chameleon-like lizard, but this one was different from the ones I had collected earlier. Peppershrikes and brush-finches were seen here as well as several species of warblers and flycatchers. About 15:00 we continued on stopping at Olmos for shopping. We then continued on past dark until arriving at Cerro Vieja.
