5 km N, 5 km E of Pomacochus, Dept. of Amazonas,
Peru, elevation 6000 ft.
August 27 I caught many bats in the net during night. All
of us helped in putting them up. Carl caught
several mice as did I. We put up several
Thomasomys sp. and Akadon sp. Carl early in the
morning shot a Pauraque (Nyctidromus albicollis)
He then went collecting and came back with Brown-
billed Scythebill(Campylorhamphus pusiltus), a
Squirrel Cuckoo (Piaya cayana), a Chestnut-
crested Cotinga (Ampelion rufaxilla), and a
Beryl-spangled Tanager (Tangara nigroviridis).
Ray went hunting for a short time and collected a
Rufous-collared Sparrow (Zonotrichia capensis)
and a tanager Tangara sp. I had seen several
flocks of zonotrichia on the cut-over land. I
managed to collect a Masked Trogon (Trogon
personatus). I had shot it 3 times and certainly
was impressed by the fragileness of the skin as
I was putting it up. I walked some on road at
top of ridge. I saw many birds very high in the
trees. I saw several small flocks of tanagers
but did not see any that I thought Carl had not
collected. On my way back a native called to me
and pointed out a large animal feeding in plowed
field. This was a CoatiMundi. I did not have
any large shot but I was able to get within
about 15 ft. before shooting. The animal did not
