R.B. Hamilton 1967 Journal 8 km WSW of Bagua, Dept. of Amazonas, Peru, elevation 1500 ft. August 21 Area near stream is mostly tall mesquite trees. Away from stream we see more cactus and dry scrub areas. After arriving Ray and I went hunting up stream for both birds and herps. We caught several Phyllodactylous sp. under rotten bark on dead trees. We saw small buteo on snag of tree but it flew before we were within range. Variety of birds seemed larger here than in most places we had been previously. We saw several species of wrens, Synallixis sp., ovenbirds, warblers, tanagers, and finches. Several species of lizards were also seen. Ray and Fred set out traps in the area while Carl set out a net over a stream hoping to catch bats. After supper Carl went hunting for night birds while Ray and Fred went into a nearby town for refreshment. Carl collected 2 West Peruvian Screech-Owls (Otus roboratus) and one Pauraque (Nyctidromus albicollis). I went out with him about 23:00. Many owls and caprimulgids (at least 2 species) were heard; however, we could not get within range to shoot any. There was a small drizzle during the night. August 22 We awoke about 06:00. Carl had caught 6 bats in his net during the night. We had a visit from the police who wanted to know what we were doing
