Rio Chamaya, 35 km SE of San Felipe, Dept. of
Cajamarca, Peru, elevation 2500 ft.
August 21 identify them. A small irrigation stream went
through this grove and many frogs were in the
stream. Higher up the hill vegetation was
mostly scattered cactus and grasses. I saw a
large snake about 4 ft. long but it disappeared
before I was able to shoot it. About 11:00 I
returned to camp empty-handed and somewhat em-
barrassed. We departed about 11:15.
En route to Bagua, Dept. of Amazonas, Peru
On the way we followed streams as much as pos-
sible. Area is basically dry but there is much
vegetation along streams. We saw many doves and
Saffron Finches (Sicalis flaveola). About 15:00
we crossed Rio Maranon. We stopped in the middle
of the bridge and took pictures. We later
stopped in an area short of Bagua which con-
sisted mostly of cactus and low shrubs. This
was a very dry cactus thorn scrub vegetation. We
looked here for birds and lizards and saw
Fasciated Wrens, other wrens, conebills, mocking
birds, and Ray flushed some kind of caprimulgid.
We did not collect anything here. We moved on
about 2 km to where a small stream crossed road
in an area of much higher vegetation, mostly
mesquite, and established camp.
