El Arenal, 1 km S, 7 km W of Pomahuaca, on
Rio Huancabamba, elevation 3000 ft.
August 18 under a log upon returning from putting up net.
Carl managed to shoot a Nectar-eating bat and I
caught a hummingbird in my net. I slept near
net during night and caught 2 bats.
August 19 We arose about 06:00. Weather was clear.
During night I caught 4 bats in my net. I put
up one and Ray put up others. Early in morning
Carl managed to shoot a Lesser Nighthawk. Both
Ray and Fred went hunting during day. I used
time to put up specimens since I wasn't feeling
particularly well. I hunted during middle of
day but had no success. During the day Ray
collected 2 Ferruginous Pygmy-Owls (Glaucidium
brasilianum), 1 Croaking Ground-Dove, and 1
Groove-billed Ani (Crotophaga sulcirostris).
Fred collected 1 Fasciated Wren (Campylorhynchus
fasciatus). I collected a Streaked Saltator
(Saltator albicollis) in my net. Before dark
Carl set out some steel traps down by the river.
He had found some cat tracks in the sand and
there were no domestic cats in the area. I
moved my net to what I hoped would be a bettert
spot. Ray put out a net by the stream. During
the day several tanagers and wrens were seen in
this location but we were unable to collect any.
After supper Ray, Fred, and 2 Peruvian boys
