2 Km S, 16 Km W of San Felipe, Dept. of Cajamarca, Peru, elevation 4000 ft.
August 18 During the night I caught several bats in my net but felt worse during the night and by morning was quite ill. After breakfast I checked my traps and found them empty. Carl's traps were also empty but Fred caught one mouse, probably a Phyllo-tis darwani. Fred went hunting and collected one Bare-faced Dove (Metriopelia cecilae) and one Yellow Grosbeak (Pheucticus chrysopeplus).
The vegetation here consists mostly of small trees 20-30 ft. high which are regularly scattered with occasional clumps. The ground is very bare with only small scattered herbaceous vegetation. Tropical gnat-catchers, long-tailed mockingbirds, and several species of flycatchers and conebills were observed in this area. One pair of Scarlet-fronted Parakeets (Aratinga wagleri) was noticeably flying around the nearby cliffs, investigating many of the nooks and crannies. We could not imagine what they were doing so finally Carl shot one hoping to determine if it were in breeding condition. It was not. We left area about noon.
