En Route to San Felipe, Dept. of Cajamarca, Peru
16 km N, 25 km E of Olmos, Dept. Lambayeque,
Peru, elevation 4300 ft.
August 17 on the hill. This topography greatly surprised
me as I thought the moisture was coming from the
east but the vegetation indicated it is coming
from the west, the area we are now in being in
the rain shadow. We descended the mountain. By
the time we reached the bottom it was quite dark.
At elevation 4000 ft. we camped in area of exten-
sive mesquite and pepper trees in dry river
bottom and saw some Zapote sp. Here Fred, Carl
and I set traps. With Fred's help I also set up
a net. Ray was sick, and I wasn't feeling too
well either.
2 km S, 16 km W of San Felipe, Dept. of
Cajamaraca, Peru, elevation 4000 ft.
This area was especially notable for the great
number of wasps flying around. We had to watch
our step every second in order to avoid being
stung. In setting up camp we tried to get away
from cliffs on north side of road where these
wasps seemed to be nesting. After supper, we
went owl hunting. We heard one screech owl but
could not find it. Carl found a cave in which
vampire bats were roosting. I slept out under
the net having retired about 23:00.
