En route to Jaen, Dept. Cajamarca, Peru
August 15 must have been very recent. We stopped the car
and looked around for snake. (I am not sure if
we really wanted to find it or not.) There was
a large fig tree near stream on which there were
many birds. I shot and missed a Squirrel Cuckoo
and what appeared to be a barbet in the road. I
saw a yellow-bellied flycatcher and a warbler.
Fred shot a blue Tanager (Thraupis sp.) and a
Parula Warbler. Ray collected a Tropidurus Hyla.
We then proceeded further up the road looking for
a favorable campsite. There were few places
where we could park the car and where there was
also a suitable place for our tent. We finally
chose a spot near a bridge crossing a stream.

Two squirrels were seen when we first arrived at
camp. Carl collected a Parula Warbler at this
site. Then Carl and Fred set traps and Ray and
I set up a net and then put up some specimens.
After supper Ray, Fred, and I went down to the
stream frog hunting. We found several frogs but
were unable to find any snakes. I planned to
