July 22 Sagemen Creek 3mi NW Hobart Mills, Nevada Co., Calif.
stem starting at small end
& working to large end while
holding stick & rotating it like
corn on the cob. Then swam up
toward small island, came back,
started to N shore where
first seen & again was lost to
sight at 7 PM. 7:02-7:15 seen
obscurely working away on a
little isle near N shore. Once or
twice appeared to let old dead
sticks float down. Then swam
up to little cove just below small
dam where it was last night,
dove & disappeared. 7:20 caught
sight of it again working over in
N channel which is partially screened
from sight. Doing something w/ dead sticks.
7:25 thrashing about in willows. 7:28
dove from small cove (into bank burrow?)
7:35 heard beaver crunching on dead
stick near cove. 7:41 young doe came to
water's edge below where beaver was
working, drank, crossed to "gravel patch
island" & grazed not more than 25"
from beaver. Beaver cut & ate willows
in place, doe saw movement &
