July 21 Sagenen Creek, 3 mi. NW Hobart Mills, Nevada Co., Calif.
recent cutting seems to be willow
of less than an inch diam. Saw
7" lizard, v. thin, about 1/4" diam, long
tail, about 1/2 T. length. legs very
short but not as in Batrachoseps.
In amongst the boulders of rockslide.
Rather fast but catchable probably.
Wonder if it could be producing the mys-
terious calcareous deposits on these
rocks. Farther downstream near blow-
dam there were three 3-inchers & one
8-incher in 4' of water where bottom
was partially silted. Almost stumbled
on another home before recognizing it
as such. Roughly 250 yds below the
upper house & just below blasted dam
on S side. Top of house about 8'
from water's edge. Entrance easily
visible about 2' below surface. Left
3 PM. Returned & climbed dead pine 6:45
PM. This covers a broad sweep of stream
above & below this "new" house. 7:35 mut.
of willows attracted my eye 30 yds down
stream from the house & an adult beaver
appeared at water's edge [ ]" willow cut-
ting, entered water, swam to opposite
shore, dove & disappeared (into bank
