Hall 1955 Sept 6 Sagellen Creek, 3 mi. NW Hobart Mills, Nevada Co., California Lower calling from N shore and I succeeded in calling one up. It circled around my head one, then settled down about 50' away to call a few times. The call has a third note following the "will", audible when this close. Sept 7 Saw a mink running along on the slope next to one of the Roadside ponds a little after 9 as I was on my way down to Lower Colony. Arr. 9:30 and did detail mapping till about 3, scaring up a mallard from pond just upstream from R'slide shade at 10:30// Arr. R'slide 4 and did detail Lower mapping 4:45// Driving out to main road 5:35 just upstream from R'slide saw a nice big marten lope across the road + disappear among rocks + trees supporting road shoulder. By far the best view, the only good view, I've had of one. Like a furry, long short-legged cat. Arr. Lower Colony 6:15 PM in old tree opposite "0" sta, about 1/3 of the way across from sta. 0. Had a good open view of one of the channels & a couple of dams but saw no beaver. 7:10 one mink seen swimming among grassy spots in pond. Climbed down 7:45 PM. Called up a poorwill at 8 just like last night except that there weren't any calling to begin with this time. One circled me, then settled about 50' away & called a few times.
