July 9 Lowermost colony. 2:15 PM. Attempted to map this colony by plane-table baseline method but willows & other cover is so dense that we couldn't see enough points across dam to tie in with. This method probably would still work for mapping one shore at a time but traversing would be better I think. Jim already has a sketch map he drew a couple of days ago. Left
July 10 6 PM. Uppermost colony, 10:30 AM. Betty & I sat marked most of the unused aspen in general zone of used aspen on N side of pond. Wondered for a long time whether to include all trees within a certain distance, say 30' of shore or only those in general zone of use which varies greatly from place to place. In one area they have gone 40 or 50' from shore to cut small
