Aug 22 Sage Hen Creek, 3 mi. NW Hobart Mills, Nevada Co., Calif.
Lower Lots of chickarees calling. 7:32 a bit
leaves lodge to swim into main pond. Rat
dives. The kit perches on a floating log
and feeds. Rat reappears. The kit
swims out to get more water weed,
which is what it must have been
eating the first time, returns to
eat it aboard the floating log.
7:37 another bit (at least the 3rd
seen tonight) approaches lodge from
N end of dam while an adult,
whose tail not visible, appears from
S end of the dam & large willow
stick & enters lodge. Think it was
not a marked animal but am not
positive. 7:41 kit on log dives off, swims
to lodge, floats, then swims back to
main pond. Muskrat, which is a little
smaller than a kit this time of year, seen
swimming in the main pond; another one
is in the near the channel. Then one (the 2nd?)
cuts some grass & dives & it near (into?)
lodge. 7:50 one kit is just swimming
back & forth out in the pond, another sits
in shallowe near lodge. A bit comes back
to perch on log to eat some willow cuttings,
the other one still squatting in shallows.
