July 2 Sageshen Creek, 3 mi. NW Hobart Mills, Nevada Co, Calif
more firs are cut & even a small
lodgepole. Never seen positive evidence
of conifer use before this. 2 more
small dams & more cutting. Seems to
be a v. large colony. Sapsucker flew
to dead pine snag just above a large
dam, the largest of any seen so far
in any of the other colonies. First
impression is that this isn't a very
old colony although it is large. This was
based on fact that not many standing
drowned l'poles are visible compared to
rockslide colony. But on second thought,
there are a great many fallen trunks
which may have been drowned by
the pond a long time ago, thus the
pond may be older than rockslide
one. Probably the case. Good deal of
sprotting which shows on only a
couple of stumps I checked, growth
starting 1951. Have to check more. Dam
really tremendous. Don't see any lodge
but don't have time for thorough look this
time. Abundant fresh aspen cutting on west
bank. Lots of willow below main dam.
Another fair-sized dam 70 yds up from main
dam. Left 5 PM, Weather clear & hot all day
