Hall 1953 266 May 21 Sage Hen Creek, 3 mi. NW Hobart Mills, Nevada Co, Calif. Upper slopes of "Wyethia Knob" & dry stream. Neither willow nor asp. are out yet up here. Came across 2 very fine scent mounds, the best yet seen. One, a pile of dirt, little sticks & grass was on the water's edge on the little island between the 2 obs. trees. 2-1/2" x 1-1/2" x 8-10" (height). Odor V. strong. The other one was on edge of shore right opposite the lodge. Snow is up to 1' deep in places. Total was about 35 which is less than 4% of total cutting to date. Saw warbling vireo. May 22 Arr. Poolside colony by 10. Fox sparrow. Arr Lower Lower Colony 10:15 Birds seen: Pil. warbling vireo, Pewee, Song Sp., mt. bluebird, creeper, Mallard, flicker. Many down logs and stumps torn open, big bears presumably hunting for grubs as was noted here about this time last spring. Some willow leaves out to 3/4", others just bursting buds. Made a visual comparison of no. of cut stumps beyond 100' from shore (mostly on S shore just opp. main
