Apr. 15 Sage Hen Creek, 3 mi. NW Hobart Mills, Nevada Co., Calif.
finch. Seen: r.b. + w.b. nuthatch, chickadee,
Williamson's sapsucker drumming, flicker,
joshawk, Steller's jay. Though Kiln Indian
covered uniformly by a foot of snow, I
spotted a Belding's ground squirrel on
its edge just N. of the creek where ground
was bare & is flat. This is in same spot
where they've been seen often in summer
(cf. July 14,5/1952, p. 23,15 et al). It ran
into a hole between two large l'pole
roots at "Kensinger's" old camp site.
Clickaree at ford, gray coat + I think
still had ear tufts. Clipsmunkes
Upper nearly, Robins. Arr. U. colony 10:50
One to two feet of snow on each bank of
pond but only a very thin layer of
ice on pond itself. No snow on lodge.
A 14" asp cut + lying so 90% of it is over
pond but only 3" x smaller branches
have been cut; bark from a 1'square
area removed from trunk. Big pile of
barbed sticks lying at end of short
canal N of lodge. 11:55 tools & w shot
