Hall 1955 261 Mar 5 Gray Lodge Refuge, 5 mi. SW Gridley, Butte Co., Calif. Left Berkeley 9:30 AM & Bob Lechleitner in his truck, arr. Gray Lodge 2 PM. Clear but v. windy. Rest of afternoon set Bob's 6 live-traps using carrots as bait. Then made a roadside census & set out flash trap along side of one of his traps, carrot bait. Many voles, some hornbros, shorellers & ruddies about. Couple of marsh hawks & a bur- rowing owl seen. 9 PM checked live traps & flash trap but no catches. Moon 3/4 full & wind still strong. Mar 6 Wind calming down by mid morn. Checked all traps about 8. One jack, marshel was caught. Am. bittern & a yellowlegs seen on way to check. Rest of mom till about 2:30 we hunted in several fields about a mile or so S of itgs, getting total of 7 rabbits. On way back I tried to get an apparent- ly sick rabbit & bow & arrow but only nicked him. Just before sup- pel I set out flash trap in field near Bob's cottage. Bay's phoebe around barnyard just before sunset. swallows also around. Stopped in to talk to Johnnie Cowan
