Sept 9 Sagehen Creek, 6500ft, 3 mi. NW Hobart Mills, Nevada Co., Calif.
R'slide 4 PM. Set 3 traps and left. Came back at 6. Saw a deer at the main pond 6:15. Obs. tree 6:30 scared doe & twin fawns which have almost lost spots com-
pletely. 6:45 saw medium-sized beaver floating in the main pond. No marks.
Then spotted a second, smaller one swim-
ming under water. Tail not marked & 2 lost sight of him. 1st one still floating
Second one reappeared & they both float idly & swim slowly. 6:55 smaller one entered a cove, came ashore to feed on willow while the larger one dis-
appeared over crossing to the V fork & was lost to sight. Smaller one fed in another
cove; fed on the very smallest willow shoots, finer than the ones I marked
my willow samples. 7:00 swam up to blasted dam, then back to pond, floated
fed on willow within reach of the water. 7:05 came ashore 8' from water
to cut willow, took cutting to shallows to eat. 7:10 dove into water, swam to channel N of the isle underwater & disappeared.
Saw the same 3 deer moving back towards me
from downstream where I'd scared them.
7:15 noticed commotion in water N of isle
