J.G.Hall 1954 229 Aug 28 Sagehen Creek, 6500ft, 3 mi. NW Hobart Mills, Nevada Co, California Upper. grammed the tree figured would be counted "in" although last year it would have been counted "out" since the base of the tree was out. The location of a tree as far as the beaver is concerned (which is what we're trying to measure here) is the location of that part of the trunk a foot to eighteen inches above the ground and not necessarily the base, although the two coincide for trees growing vertically. I left at 4:30 for meeting with Wicks Yard farther up basin. After crossing the upper ford I took the road south. Saw a beechey's mi. above the ford; had seen one earlier back at the colony. At the fork in the road surprised in Ceanothus, trades quite numerous. Also saw a marmot under some big firs. About another 3/4 mile came on Wicks jeep parked so decided to follow roughly up the S slope parallel to but on E side of the main little stream which becomes Sagehen Creek proper after confluence to a half-dozen little feeders. Much of this slope im- penetrable Ceanothus and I got off the stream & headed straight up as best
