grammed the tree figured would be counted "in" although last year it would have been counted "out" since the base of the tree was out. The location of a tree as far as the beaver is concerned (which is what we're trying to measure here) is the location of that part of the trunk a foot to eighteen inches above the ground and not necessarily the base, although the two coincide for trees growing vertically. I left at 4:30 for meeting with Wicks Yard farther up basin. After crossing the upper ford I took the road south. Saw a beechey's mi. above the ford; had seen one earlier back at the colony. At the fork in the road surprised in Ceanothus, trades quite numerous. Also saw a marmot under some big firs. About another 3/4 mile came on Wicks jeep parked so decided to follow roughly up the S slope parallel to but on E side of the main little stream which becomes Sagehen Creek proper after confluence to a half-dozen little feeders. Much of this slope im- penetrable Ceanothus and I got off the stream & headed straight up as best
