J.G.Hall 1954 225 Aug 24 Sagehen Creek, 6500ft, 3 mi. NW Hobart Mills, Nevada Co., California Rockslide Middle Ols. tree 6:25 P.M. strong breeze + a clear sky. Noticed 2 lingfishers chasing each other noisily about ponds at upper end of the colony. 7:15 a large, unmarked beaver came up the N channel, almost to the favorite crossing and dove into the banks burrow there. 7:20 large beaver swims from near this burrow, going down- stream via N. channel. 7:30 a medium- small one seen swimming near entrance to this burrow but I soon lost sight of him. 7:35 medium-small one comes up over cross- ing, comes ashore at lodge to cut willow which it dives. At 7:40 same or v. similar beaver leaves lodge, goes down-pond, up-pond under- water and cuts willows just above the cross- sing. Swims across pond to cover just above lodge, hauls out briefly, only to dive into lodge at 7:45. Emerges a couple min. later to cruise in pond, then comes ashore near "little red" to cut willow for sometime. at 7:55 it dove near lodge but reappeared + cruised. Dove with a splash and something moved in the brush. Dove again + again near lodge. I climbed down at 8:00. At 8:10 as I approached the main dam a "monster" beaver went up over the dam + into the pond & willow cutting.
