21 Aug Sagehen Creek 6500 ft, 3 mi. NW Hobart Mills, Nevada Co., Calif.
Upper fir thicket directly opp. S end of dam but I could see nothing. Immediately a deer was glimpsed bounding at full speed thru the brush towards the thickets. No further action. Left 8:05
22 Aug Left main camp 10:45 & at the sheepherder's Rockslide mdw saw 3 does & one "knot" buck. Calf unconcerned & would spar w/ the front legs occasionally. Farther down, at Ramsey's old camp site, came on a doe & two fawns. One fawn got stranded on S side of road while the doe & the other one were on N side. Stranded fawn acted confused, jumping & running about, finally crossing to N side way ahead of our car.
Reached Rockslide 11 AM, saw 2 does down among the willows, saw kingfisher settling off and a Cooper's hawk perched in the top of a L'pole & screamed from time to time for about 15 min. Finished counting live willow twigs of sample D. Table below includes yesterday's work
