J.G. Hall 1952 June 25 Independence Lake, Sierra Co., Calif. Particular trouble in travelling upstream over or around these dams, at least in this season of the year when the stream is so swollen that it by-passes the dams in many places. Today Glenn found a Trout upstream from the dam. There were probably many more below it but Glenn believes that the number of fish upstream depends upon the amount of competition for nesting sites downstream. Therefore the effect, if any, of the dams and ponds upon upstream movement of these fish at this time of year is not at all clear-cut. It will be worthwhile to check on movement upstream in the fall of the browns and brooks, when the water is lower. Didn't find any house, at least what I thought was a house. May later when we have a longer visit. Much evidence of deer activity here as at the other colonies. Noted several pairs of ant-throats patrolling or guarding their areas in the course below the dam. We reached our boat about 4:45 and the fishermen had caught 3 more cuts, 2 trout.
