J.G.Hall 1954 208 July 23 Sageman Creek, 6500ft, 3 mi. NW Hobart Mills, Nevada Co, Calif. R'slide for H, M for I, M & N for Jv 8:30 PM. Brock saw Reset all 4 traps. The "mangled" beaver in a stretch of stream in the lower part of the R'slide area, roughly opposite the lower OBS snag. This extends the "range" of this beaver another 100 yds for a grand total of 200 yds of stream. July 24 8:30 AM. Checked all 4 traps but no beaver. 10:30, lowest pond, saw 4 baby ducks & ru- four heads & dark gray bodies interrupted by big white spots on the flanks. Have preps similar to those of Belding ground squirrels. Swam to big log, ran around it & disappeared down stream below the dam. Think they were baby mergansers. They were 6 or 7" long. Checked willow- stakes driving in & painting new ones for all except the N stake for B which will have to be relocated. 4 PM scared fawn at N. end of R'slide area near pond #13. 7:45 PM climbed a tree to watch for beaver in ponds 12 & 13. Had all traps reset, 2 of them in pond 12. 7:45 PM saw a fawn. 8:00 q hum- mingbird hovering near my perch 30' above ground. Had green back & top of head buffy on flanks & white tips to tail corners. Could have been Calliope or Rufous. Left at 8:50 after seeing no beaver.
