July 23 Sageman Creek, 6500ft, 3 mi. NW Hobart Mills, Nevada Co, Calif.
R'slide for H, M for I, M & N for Jv 8:30 PM. Brock saw Reset all 4 traps.
The "mangled" beaver in a stretch of stream
in the lower part of the R'slide area, roughly
opposite the lower OBS snag. This extends
the "range" of this beaver another 100 yds
for a grand total of 200 yds of stream.
July 24 8:30 AM. Checked all 4 traps but no beaver.
10:30, lowest pond, saw 4 baby ducks & ru-
four heads & dark gray bodies interrupted by
big white spots on the flanks. Have
preps similar to those of Belding ground
squirrels. Swam to big log, ran around
it & disappeared down stream below the
dam. Think they were baby mergansers.
They were 6 or 7" long. Checked willow-
stakes driving in & painting new ones for all
except the N stake for B which will have
to be relocated. 4 PM scared fawn at N.
end of R'slide area near pond #13. 7:45 PM
climbed a tree to watch for beaver in ponds
12 & 13. Had all traps reset, 2 of them in
pond 12. 7:45 PM saw a fawn. 8:00 q hum-
mingbird hovering near my perch 30' above
ground. Had green back & top of head
buffy on flanks & white tips to tail corners.
Could have been Calliope or Rufous.
Left at 8:50 after seeing no beaver.
