July 21 Sageshen Creek, 6500 ft., 3 mi. NW Hobart Mills, Nevada Co., Calif.
R'slide first real proof that a beaver freely travels
substantially up & down from the gap in the
blasted dam which I'd previously sus-
pected might form some kind of a terri-
torial boundary. The skinned areas
on back of shoulders and head were
plain & unmistakable but I could see no
mark on the tail.
At about this
same time a small one appeared between the
ends of the blasted dam but was lost.
8:30 small one near side disappeared, re-
appeared, then dove into lodge. This one
seems to have what looks like a big fly
sitting on his head between but a little
posterior to his eyes:
This may or may
not turn out to be any good as a field
July 22 mark. Left 8:35 P.M. Up early to check
traps since last night was v. cold. No luck.
Spent all morning showing Don Cornelius,
Gerald Geraldson & Mr. Williamson of the FS,
Bob Hoffmann's trap lines. In afternoon made
signs for traps & set all 4 just before
supper. By 8:30 temp. was as low as it
had been this time last night so I went
July 23 down & set hooks on the traps. Checked
point of willow strips and couldn't locate:
