J.G. Hall 1954 199 July 5 Sagehen Creek, 6500ft, 3 mi. NW Hobart Mills, Nevada Co., Calif. R'slide where tracks have been numerous for some time. This is a little above the middle of the three rocksllide lodges and near where I caught my first beaver (dead) last yr. Shortly after 8 I climbed up in the old tree just below main dam. Not much activity other than 2 does which came to water at 8:40 from S bank and one came right down to the minke set, drank, slowly worked upstream, browsing as she came. One doe had a distinct dark line coming down dorsal surface of tail - like O. h. californicus, the other's tail was a typical O. h. h. The one & the stripe was not as distinct as a "good" californicus but was definite suggestive. 8:50. Nighthawks flying low over rocksllide, then ponds, then up to within 15' of me in tree. Surely appears to be smaller and to fly & more rapid wingbeats & lower than the "looming" nighthawks. Possible cause for the white wash marks on Rockslide? Left at 9 PM. (See next page for diagrams of samples "H" & "I".
