June 25 Independence Lake, Sierra Co., Calif. 2 PM
Arrived with Glenn Flittner at NE end
of lake via truck. Weather threatening. Started
down lake in motor boat to pick up gill
net set previous day on N shore about half-
way down. As soon as we started off, a real
hail storm descended and we could see it was
especially violent at SW end. Hauled in gill net
which had 10 suckers (a couple c start
of breeding coloration), 1 Ryb mt. Whitefish,
2 Brook Trout and 1 tremendous Brownie
which weighed 6 1/4 lbs. This net was in 35'
of water. Storm let up by this time
& we pushed on to end of lake where 6 fisher-
men were taking cut-throats illegally (within
300 ft of the inlet). The cut-throats are
in the inlet
beginning to prepare to spawn as
the boy saw over 50 fish in the shal-
lows of the gravel, some singly, some
in pairs and one pair making a
nest. Glenn + 2 worked right up
to the beaver colony which is about
500 yds upstream. This colony is located
in a grove of very large, old aspen,
some 2' in diam. Many large trees
have been cut or are being cut; one I
photographed had an estimated diam.
of 16" at the top of the cut + 2' at the
