June 24 Sagehen Creek, 3 mi. NW Hobart Mills, Nevada Co., Calif.
Took stroll over to mdw. across creek from camp. Marmot occupying stump of the bridge log again. Sheep are in! Elbert and I saw a pair of evening grosbeaks in willows at generator bluff. Don't remember seeing any here before. A little later at camp had good looks at clapping sparrow, W.D. nuthatch, red-breasted sapsucker, Audubon's warbler. Weather clear
June 25 & warm. >> About 1 PM while Gard & I Rislade went down to upper end of Rockslide colony to take a trial willow sample. A lot of problems. Made a run using red paint - think yellow would be better for weathered willow. Went down to lower limit of rock-slide colonies (the big dam built along a log) to see if beavers had extended workings downstream; no evidence of this. Left about 4 after a swim in deep channel above lowest dam. 7 PM left for rockslide colonies to go fishing. Saw three does, 2 in willows at stream edge, all very tame & hesitant to leave willows. Suspect fawns but saw none. Heard saw what was probably a beechey about same place on road where we
