June 11 Cottonwood Creek, 9300 ft, White Mts, Mono Co., California.
* Took trip to Naval Research Station, part way down Crooked Creek but turned backs before reaching the end because some people were there.
Went to Cottonwood Canyon, arriving about 9 AM, weather clear + warm. A few cirrus clouds. Vegetation sage, fern-brush, Mt. Mahogany, Pinyon-Pine and good stands of aspen.
Very rocky, great boulders, rounded instead of shale-like layered stuff in Wyman Creek. Scenery v. similar to Sierrade, N. Mon.
And Warblers conspicuous, s.c. Kinglets heard frequently. Robin's nest found. Chickadees, Steller's Jay & white crowned sparrows.
Shot a worm hermit thrush.
Left about noon. Weather gradually clouding up. * Before Trip 2 checked traps & caught 19 P. maniculatus,
3 P. truei, 3 P. crinitus & 1 Microtus longicaudus.
June 12 Went up the canyon near the ridge which goes to Birch Creek. Weather overcast + birds v. quiet. Flock of crossbills came down canyon & I shot two. On way
