6 June Roberts Ranch, 8200 ft., White Mts., Inyo Co., California.
On road down to Ranch we noticed a
track of medium-sized lion. The
track continued all the way down
to the ranch + led over to the spring
for water. Also noted a smaller cat
track at the spring. A little
pond in a meadow just below
ranch bldgs and v.g. swallow fly-
ing over it in numbers. Brown shot
leg Russell, that different at first
from those of trail but compari-
son showed they were v. similar if
not the same. Orail (Calif., prob-
ably) common. Empidonax + Pewees
present, House Wren nesting under
eave of a bldg. Polin the same.
Steller Jays heard & nut-crackers.
This canyon is narrower than
the other two with much rock-
ier slopes; lots of talus & Cories
calling. Microthus californicus in
our mdw. Song sparrows for first
time. White crowned sparrow
in willows + Brewer's sparrow in
sage. From Pond there are beaver
workings for about a mile contin-
uously down stream. Lots of
