Sagelhen Creek, Nevada Co., Calif.
21 June clear for rest of day
Independence Lake, Nevada & Sierra Cos.,
24 June Calif. Arrived about 10:15 AM on truck w the boys who were going to check out-throat spawning at Lake's inlet. Betty & I started up over the ridge SE of the lake, heading in SE direction from the NE end of the lake at about 10:40.
Saw what we were sure were red firs for first time. Big Jeffries & fir open forest on Indep. side of ridge but towards top manzanita & chirpin chin gets thicker & on Sagelhen side gets almost impenetrable. Saw fox sparrows & white crowns on top. About halfway down a red-tail screamed & circled us in a grove of large Jeffries. Had nest in one about 75' off ground. Noticed a Swainson's at Indep. before we left. Hit Sagelhen just below Beaver pool Saw a little shrew (50ft?) 5' from edge of pond! where we had lunch. Took off upstream about 1:30 to find Hoff- man's lean to and continued to skirt around the basin at lower limits of cleangrapin.
