May 25 Trail Canyon, 8900 ft, White Mts, Esmeralda Co, Nevada
20 miles to Chiatovich Ranch by noon. Inquired at Ranch about Chiatovich,
middle & Trail Canyons. Chiatovich le-
ing irrigated so impassable now.
Met Long Powell of Geog. Dept. who
was headed up Trail Canyon in
order to climb Boundary Peak so
decided to go up there with him.
Mostly sage in valley but as we as-
cended came into Pinyons (some
showing porcupine work) a very little
aspen, mostly sage and, in the
stream course willows and birch
Betula fontinalis as well as wild
Rose. These three grow so thick that
crossing stream virtually impos-
sible in many places. Picked a
campsite about 200 yds below the end
of the road in a grassy area. Can-
yon walls rise sharply on both
sides here. Vegetation on N-facing
slope mostly sage & a good deal of
Bitterbrush and some singleleaf
Pinyon just below camp, none above.
Higher up on slopes Mt. Mahogany
occurs. Some Pennycress in the
ravines. After setting up camp we set
